“Pip’s’ portrait in oil, created to capture the character and presence of a much-loved dog.
Painting at Goodwoof 2026: Live Dog Portraits at Goodwood
I’m honoured to have been invited as the official Ruby Tree Illustrator at Goodwoof 2026, held at the Goodwood Estate on 17–18 May.
Over the weekend, I will be creating live portrait sketches in remembrance of much-loved dogs, bringing my portrait practice and observational sketching into one of the UK’s most celebrated canine events.
Goodwoof is Goodwood’s annual dog show, set within the rolling Sussex countryside. It brings together breeders, handlers, owners and dog lovers for two days of competition, demonstrations and a shared appreciation of the bond between people and their dogs. Alongside breed judging and working trials, the event has a warm, inclusive atmosphere - part traditional show, part modern festival - with a strong focus on connection, memory and companionship.
The Ruby Tree
The Ruby Tree is a quiet and reflective part of the event, dedicated to remembering dogs who are no longer with us.
Being invited to work here feels particularly meaningful. My work has always centred on capturing more than a likeness - aiming instead to reflect character, presence and the relationship between a dog and its owner.
Across the weekend, I will be working in oil to create quick tonal sketches as well as more considered portrait studies. Each piece is shaped not only by observation, but by the small stories shared - a dog’s temperament, a favourite walk, or the quiet rituals that define companionship.
A Living Sketchbook of Dogs
For an artist, this is a rare opportunity: to work from life across a wide range of breeds, personalities and energies in a single setting.
Goodwoof brings together an extraordinary cross-section of dogs and their people, and the Ruby Tree offers a space where those relationships can be honoured in a simple, visual way.
Alongside live sketching, I continue to take on a small number of bespoke dog portrait commissions from photographs.
If you’re visiting Goodwoof, please do come and say hello at the Ruby Tree.
If we don’t meet at the event, and you’re considering a portrait to capture your own dog - whether to celebrate their life now or to remember them - you are very welcome to get in touch.
